2003 Turtle Season Diary
The season is finally starting to pick up a bit -
water temp has been unseasonably cold this year. I don't know,
but it seems we don't have as much nesting activity going on and
nests are taking a while to emerge. But...we are have good
times and meeting loads of nice folks. We'll be posting new
photos/stories as the season progresses, so check back often for
updates.
Kevin's Birthday
7/11/03 Kevin and I spend our
birthdays together - no matter what - so it was no surprise Kevin's
birthday fell on a "turtle day". Natures gift to him
was the opportunity to relocate two nests that were laid too close
to high tideline. One nest had 110 the other 121 eggs...check
it out and enjoy.
Cidalia's Babies
7/24/03 This is Cidalia's first season as a
Turtle Patrol Volunteer. We got to document her
first encounter with a hatchling.
Swiss Adoption
7/24/03 A wonderful couple from
Switzerland adopted one of our nests. We had the
pleasure of cleaning the nest with them and to everyone's enjoyment,
this nest produced 5 live hatchlings. One of the hatchlings
was caught under a large shell and one had a root wrapped around a
flipper. Here is a picture
of the happy parents (with Cidalia) watching two of their kids
head out to sea.
Wow
7/24/03 These
two little guys were all smiles. Adults like to get in on
the action too. Hatchlings draw
a crowd and give us an opportunity to answer questions.
Surfer Dudes...
7/24/03 ...to the rescue. Help!!!
we can't make it thru the breaking waves. No problem, these
two gentlemen offered a helping hand - they
took our hatchlings "surfing" to calmer waters.
Thanx again guys for all the help.
Turtle Shots
Have you ever seen a turtle
belly?
Here's lookin at you,
then I'm out of here.
That water is COLD
7/25/03 We were cleaning a rather nasty nest -
29 dead hatchlings in various stages of decomposing, when
we ran across this "little" guy. At first he was quite
lifeless, but once he was given an ocean bath he perked right
up.
Friends
7/25/03 We get the added bonus of meeting so
many nice folks while on patrol. If we get real lucky, our
friends are there when we clean a nest and we get to share
the wonder of interacting with the hatchlings.
